If you’ve wondered how to add metallic foil to a handmade card without making the whole project complicated, this easy Hot Foil Card using the Lustrous Leaves Bundle by Stampin’ Up!® is a great place to start. The beautiful copper details make the leaves look extra special, while the rest of the card stays nice and simple.

That’s one of the things I’m really enjoying about Hot Foil. You don’t need to foil every inch of a card to get that WOW. Sometimes just a little bit of shine is all you need! For this card, I used the Lustrous Leaves Bundle along with the Stampin’ Hot Foil System and Copper Foil. (Learn more about the Hot Foil System here.)

The Lustrous Leaves Bundle is especially fun because the Decorative Masks and Hot Foil Dies work together. I used the masks with Blending Brushes to build the different colors on the leaves, then the Copper Foil added those gorgeous metallic details.

And don’t worry, the masks are numbered and have alignment notches to help you layer the designs. That’s very helpful when you’re working with several colors!

Once the leaves were finished, I didn’t need to add a lot more to the card. A strip of Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper adds some pattern and helps ground the design, while the simple Thinking of You greeting keeps the focus right where I wanted it: on those beautiful leaves.

September ordering Bonus

A Bonus for You!

Any order you place in September includes a free 10-project tutorial featuring the Sunflower Fields Suite that you can use with any Bundle in your stamp stash.

It’s filled with cozy, step-by-step card ideas to spark your creativity when your order arrives — so you’re not staring at supplies wondering where to start.

This is a good example of why I don’t think a card needs lots of layers and embellishments to feel special.

When you have one interesting element, like these multicolored Hot Foil leaves, you can let that do the heavy lifting. Add some pretty paper, a greeting, and you’re done.

And because this one says Thinking of You, you don’t even need an occasion to send it. Sometimes a card that shows up for no particular reason is the one that means the most. A Thinking of You card really can make someone’s day.

Golden Glow, Cajun Craze, and Pecan Pie make such a pretty fall combination because they give us three different levels of warmth.

Golden Glow brings in that sunny golden color, Cajun Craze adds the rich rusty orange we expect to see in autumn, and Pecan Pie gives the combination an earthy brown that settles everything down. Blending the three colors through the Decorative Masks also gives the leaves more depth than using just one color would.

Then there’s the Copper Foil. It fits right into that warm fall palette instead of competing with it, but the metallic shine gives the leaves that little something extra when the light hits them.

Easy Hot Foil Card using the Lustrous Leaves Bundle

See how Decorative Masks, Blending Brushes, and Copper Foil work together to create beautiful fall leaves with plenty of WOW. The simple card design lets those leaves do all the work.

Supplies Needed

  • Very Vanilla Cardstock: 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" (scored at 4-1/4"_
  • Sunflower Fields Paper: 3/4" x 5-1/2"
  • Very Vanilla Cardstock: 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" (masks & die-cutting)

Instructions

  • Fold the Very Vanilla cardstock in half at the score line to create your card base.
  • Place the five-leaf Hot Foil down onto the copper foil and cut around the die using scissors to avoid wasting a lot of the copper foil. Following the instructions that come with your Hot Foil Machine, hot foil the leaves onto the center of the 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" Very Vanilla Cardstock. You can also watch a video here.
  • Line up the Lustrous Leaves Mask #1 (the number of each mask is just below the notch at the top of every mask) onto the copper foil leaves from the previous step. I find it helpful to to tape down the mask using non-stick tape. Using a Blending Brush and Golden Glow ink, lightly sponge ink over the mask.
  • Remove Mask #1 and line up Mask #2 over the leaves. Sponge Golden Glow ink over the mask, this time using a heavier hand. Remove Mask #2, add Mask #3 and sponge Cajun Craze ink over the Mask. Tip: Cajun Craze is much darker so you might want to use a light hand at first, check the color and then go back over a second time.
  • Remove Mask #3 and clean all 3 masks with a baby wipe or I prefer to take them to a sink, run cool water over the masks (front & back) and then stand up against your back splash and let air dry.
  • Run the sponged leaves through the Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine and die-cut using the five-leaf regular die from the Bundle.
  • Stamp the sentiment from the Scalloped Blooms Stamp Set in the bottom right corner of the card base using Pecan Pie ink. Adhere the strip of Sunflower Fields Designer Paper just above the stamped sentiment.
  • Adhere the leaves to the front of the card as desired. I added 3 to the front and 2 to the inside of the card.
