Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System: Does It Earn a Place in Your Craft Room?

I’ll admit it. Show me something shiny for cardmaking and you’ve already got my attention.

But then the practical side of me kicks in.

Do I really need another crafting tool?

Because as pretty as the new Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System is, I don’t want to spend $160 on something that’s complicated, takes up precious craft-room space, or ends up sitting on a shelf after the newness wears off.

And I’m guessing you don’t either.

I’ve been using the Hot Foil System quite a bit now, and what surprised me most wasn’t how beautiful the results were. I expected that.

I was surprised by how EASY it was to get those beautiful results. This Hydrangea Hue card is a perfect example. The silver foil gives it lots of WOW without lots of work.

What Is the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System?

The Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System uses heat and pressure to transfer metallic foil onto cardstock, giving you that beautiful shine without embossing powder, ink, or adhesive.

Here’s the simple version: a Hot Foil Die heats up on the platform. You add Hot Foil and cardstock, build your sandwich, and run it through your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. Peel away the foil and the design is transferred to your cardstock.

And yes, there’s a little happy moment when you peel that foil back and see the finished design. 😊

What Comes With the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System?

The Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System & Craft Class is currently $160 and includes the Hot Foil platform, shim and spacer, magnetic pick-up tool, silicone platform station, silicone cooling pad, power cord, and the Metallic Magic Craft Class.

So you have what you need for the actual hot foiling process.

There is one VERY important thing that is not included:

The Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine.

You’ll need the full-size Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine to run your Hot Foil sandwich through after the foil has been heated.

If you already own one, great. You’re not buying another die-cutting machine. The Hot Foil System works with the machine you already have.

Is the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System Easy to Use?

This was probably my biggest surprise.

Yes, I think it’s very easy to use.

There is a learning curve. I wouldn’t tell you that you’ll pull it out of the box and get perfect results on your very first try. But for me, it was similar to learning how to use the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. After you’ve done it a few times, the steps start to feel natural.

And once I got the hang of it, I found the results to be almost foolproof.

The one thing that took a little adjusting for me was the waiting. The platform needs time to heat, and I’m normally a let’s get this card done kind of stamper. 😂

But I’ve learned to use that time to cut cardstock, prep another part of my card, or clean up my workspace.

And something unexpected happened.

It made me slow down a little.

Instead of rushing from one step to the next, there’s a natural pause in the process. For someone who usually crafts at full speed, I’ve discovered that’s actually kind of nice.

Will You Actually Use the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System?

For me, this is the question that matters most.

A crafting tool isn’t a good buy just because it makes beautiful things. It’s a good buy if you actually use it.

And that’s where Hot Foil surprised me.

I can foil a beautiful background, add a greeting, and have a card that looks special without a lot of stamping, coloring, or extra layers. That fits the way I like to make cards: quick, easy, but still beautiful.

I also discovered that the foil goes much further than I expected. I recently made 60 cards and didn’t even use half a roll of foil. That made me feel much better about the ongoing cost.

So who do I think will actually use this?

If you already enjoy using your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine, love a little shine, and want an easy way to give simple cards a WOW factor, I think you’ll find lots of ways to use Hot Foil.

But if your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine is already gathering dust, you don’t particularly love metallic finishes, or the thought of learning one more crafting tool makes you tired just thinking about it, I’d wait.

You don’t need every new crafting tool.

And if you do decide Hot Foil is for you, don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once. Start with a foil color you’ll use often and one versatile Hot Foil design that works with supplies you already own.

Does the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System Earn a Place in Your Craft Room?

For me, the answer is yes.

Not because it’s new. Not because it’s shiny. And not just because it makes beautiful cards.

The Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System earned a place in my craft room because it’s easy enough that I know I’ll actually use it.

I can create a beautiful foiled background, add a simple greeting, and call it done. Or I can add stamping, die cuts, and layers when I feel like doing more.

That’s the kind of crafting tool I want to own. One that works with the way I already make cards instead of making crafting more complicated.

Your answer may be different, and that’s okay.
