Sometimes you need a birthday card that isn’t covered in flowers, balloons, or a whole lot of fuss. This Handmade Birthday Card using the Birthday Song Stamp Set from Stampin’ Up!® is playful, a little quirky, and perfect when you want to send someone a smile along with their birthday wishes.

The Birthday Song Stamp Set is such a fun choice for cards like this because the images have so much personality. I mean, we have a seal, a walrus, and three little birds hanging out together. How can you not smile at that? I kept the design fairly simple so those characters could be the stars of the card.

A Bonus for You!

Any order you place in August includes a free 10-project tutorial featuring the Stitched Season Suite that you can use with any Bundle in your stamp stash.

It’s filled with cozy, step-by-step card ideas to spark your creativity when your order arrives — so you’re not staring at supplies wondering where to start.

The large stamped image gives you plenty to look at without requiring a complicated card layout. I colored the animals in soft, natural shades using the Stampin’ Blends and then used small touches of Timid Tiger on the birds. That tiny bit of orange makes a surprising difference. I also stamped the little “HEY!” greeting on Timid Tiger cardstock so it would stand out without competing with the main image. And while this is a birthday card, with the Happy Birthday greeting on the inside, this would work well as an All-Occasion card too!

I love the Pool Party patterned paper at the top of the card because it gives the design some movement while still keeping the background soft. The birds in the pattern also tie back to the stamped birds below. It’s one of those little details that helps everything feel like it belongs together without making the card feel too busy.

0807 colors

The color combination of Peaceful Pine, Pool Party, and Timid Tiger might not be the first three colors you’d think to put together, and that’s exactly why I like them. Peaceful Pine gives the card a strong base, while Pool Party keeps everything light and fresh. Then Timid Tiger comes along in those small doses and wakes the whole thing up. It’s a great reminder that an accent color doesn’t have to be used everywhere to make an impact.

And can we talk about birthday cards for a minute? Sometimes the hardest part isn’t making the card. It’s figuring out what kind of card fits the person. Not everyone is a flowers-and-frills kind of person! A funny or unexpected image can be just the thing for a friend, husband, brother, coworker, or anyone who appreciates a little humor.

That’s one reason I like stamp sets with personality. You don’t need an elaborate technique or twelve layers to make the card interesting. Start with an image that makes you smile, choose a few colors you love, and let the artwork do most of the work.

And then comes the important part: send the card. We cardmakers are very good at making beautiful cards and then letting them live happily ever after in a box. 😂 Birthdays give us the perfect excuse to pull one out, write a few personal words inside, and remind someone that we were thinking about them.

After all, the card may only take a little while to make, but finding a handmade card in the mailbox can brighten someone’s entire day.
