There’s something irresistible about a smiling octopus, and that’s exactly why I couldn’t wait to share this project with you! This easy handmade card with the Thoughtful Octopus Stamp set by Stampin’ Up!® combines playful ocean-inspired elements with a clean, beginner-friendly layout that’s easy to recreate. This card proves that simple designs can still have plenty of personality. Whether you’re sending a birthday greeting, a little encouragement, or just reminding someone they’re loved, this cheerful octopus is sure to bring a smile before the envelope is even opened.
One of my favorite parts of this card is the sweet sentiment: “If I Could Hug You With Eight Arms, I Would.” It’s fun, unexpected, and instantly makes the card feel personal. Handmade cards have a special way of expressing emotions that can be hard to put into words, and this playful greeting does exactly that. It’s perfect for encouraging a friend, checking in on a loved one, celebrating a birthday, or simply letting someone know they’re being thought about. Sometimes a little humor paired with a heartfelt message is exactly what someone needs.

JULY ordering Bonus
A Bonus for You!
Any order you place in July includes a free 10-project tutorial featuring the Velvet Meadow Suite that you can use with any Bundle in your stamp stash.
It’s filled with cozy, step-by-step card ideas to spark your creativity when your order arrives — so you’re not staring at supplies wondering where to start.
The layout itself is a wonderfully simple Busy Bee design, making it a great design to use again and again. Designer paper creates a beautiful backdrop, while the angled focal panel draws your eye directly to the adorable octopus. That slight tilt adds movement and gives the card a relaxed, whimsical feel that perfectly matches the playful character. Because the design relies on a few well-placed layers instead of lots of embellishments, it comes together quickly while still looking polished and thoughtfully designed.
The Bloom Boutique designer paper does much of the creative work for you by creating the look of shimmering water without requiring any complicated techniques. Its soft underwater pattern sets the stage for the octopus while allowing the stamped image to remain the star of the card. It’s a wonderful reminder that choosing the right paper can instantly elevate a project and make creating handmade cards even easier.

The color combination of Night of Navy, Hydrangea Hue, and Peaceful Pine captures the peaceful feeling of life beneath the waves. Night of Navy provides strong contrast and anchors the design, while Hydrangea Hue creates the soft, calming look of open water. Peaceful Pine introduces a gentle touch of seaweed-inspired green that adds warmth and natural balance. Together, these colors create an ocean palette that feels fresh, relaxing, and perfect for showcasing the playful octopus..
Another reason I love the Thoughtful Octopus Stamp Set is its versatility. While this card uses one of the sweetest friendship sentiments in the set, it’s easy to swap the greeting and create cards for birthdays, thank-you notes, encouragement, or simply reaching out to someone who could use a smile. The cheerful octopus naturally becomes the focal point, making it easy to create cards that feel joyful, creative, and just a little unexpected—exactly what makes this stamp set so much fun to use. The playful images and versatile sentiments make it easy to create lighthearted cards with personality for a variety of occasions.
How To Make This Card
You’ll find the full supply list and step-by-step instructions below.

Easy Handmade Card with the Thoughtful Octopus Stamp
Supplies Needed
- Night of Navy Cardstock: 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" (scored at 4-1/4")
- Basic White Cardstock: 4" x 5-1/4" (inside card)
- Bloom Boutique Paper: 3-3/4" x 5-1/2" (Hydrangea Hue Pattern)
- Bloom Boutique Paper: 1-1/4" x 5-1/2" (Perfectly Pine Wave Pattern)
- Hydrangea Hue Cardstock: 2-3/4" x 2-3/4"
- Basic White Cardstock: 1/2" x 3-1/4"
Instructions
- Fold the Night of Navy cardstock in half at the 4-1/4" score line to create the card base.
- Adhere the 4" x 5-1/4" piece of Basic White cardstock inside the base card; decorate as desired.
- Adhere the Hydrangea Hue Bloom Boutique Designer Paper to the card front.
- Ink up the "fern" image using Night of Navy ink. Stamp off on scrap paper 2 times and then stamp onto the Peaceful Pine Bloom Boutique Designer Paper. Repeat until you have stamped across the entire Designer Paper. Using scissors, "banner notch" the right side of the paper and then adhere to the card front as shown.
- Ink up the "fern" image using Night of Navy ink and stamp off 2 times on your scrap paper. Stamp 2 times along the bottom of the 2-3/4" square piece of Hydrangea Hue cardstock. Repeat as necessary.
- Ink up the octopus image using Night of Navy ink. Tip: this is a bold image so make sure your stamp is well inked. Stamp onto the center of the 2-3/4" square piece of Hydrangea Hue cardstock.
- Ink the Whisper White Craft ink pad using the ink refill. You want it "wet" but not too juicy. Stamp the face onto the octopus using the Whisper White craft ink. Tip: for best results, ink up your stamp well but then stamp lightly and keep it on the cardstock for about 30 seconds, giving the ink time to transfer to the cardstock. If you press down too hard, the ink will "spread".
- Using the Whisper White Craft ink, stamp the small dots onto the octopus arms as desired.
- Adhere the Hydrangea Hue cardstock to the card front at an angle, as shown in the sample.
- Stamp the sentiment onto the 1/2" strip of Basic White cardstock using Night of Navy ink. Banner notch both sides using scissors. Adhere to the card front using Stampin' Dimensionals to finish.
