Today’s Masculine Birthday Card using the Round About Messages Stamp Set by Stampin’ Up!® is a great example of how you can add lots of pattern and interest without making the card complicated. I made this one during our Coffee & a Card live Facebook event, and the layout is especially handy when you have several pretty papers you’d like to use together.

Masculine cards can sometimes be tricky. You want the card to be interesting, but you may not want lots of flowers, bows, or other details you might normally reach for. Using pretty patterned paper is a great way to get lots of visual interest while keeping it simple all at the same time.

For this card, I let the patterned paper do a lot of that work. Instead of choosing one pattern, I cut several different papers into narrow strips and lined them up across the card front.

The trick when mixing this many patterns is giving the eye somewhere to land. That’s where the large circular birthday greeting from the Round About Messages Stamp Set comes in. The greeting creates one clear focal point right in the center of all those patterns. The little birthday cake fits inside the open center, adding just enough detail without competing with everything happening behind it.

This is also a Two-Step Stampin’ set, so you can layer images and bring in different colors. That gives you more control over the finished look without adding a complicated coloring technique.

Early Espresso, Cajun Craze, and Petal Pink make an unexpected combination that works especially well for this masculine birthday card.

Early Espresso is the grounding color. It gives the card a strong, neutral base and helps all those different patterns feel connected. Cajun Craze brings in warmth and gives the design some energy, while Petal Pink lightens everything up.

And yes, you absolutely can use pink on a masculine card! 😊 With the deeper brown and rusty Cajun Craze surrounding it, Petal Pink reads more as a soft neutral than a traditionally feminine color.

And don’t forget the inside! I carried a little of the color to the inside of the card and added the simple “celebrate” greeting with a few musical notes.

It doesn’t take much, but finishing the inside makes the card feel complete. More importantly, now it’s ready for a handwritten birthday message and an envelope.

If masculine cards tend to stump you, save this layout. Change the papers, change the colors, and you can use the same basic idea for birthdays, thank-you cards, congratulations, or almost any occasion.
